Illuminations is a series of projects, that are connected through use of aluminium sheets ; and the allegory of illumination and reflection. The idea of using aluminium as the medium for these works originated from a project to make a Riza (metal coverings) for a religious icon painting . During my research I came across Milagros, a custom amongst some Mexican Catholics of attaching small metal charms to altars or shrines. These charms were shaped to resemble various body parts, animals even inanimate objects like a house or car. They serve as a tangible reminder of a petitioners particular need.
Many of the metal images have been pulled from the pages of history, diagrammatic hearts, macabre eye operations , images from the past intended to illuminate an idea or concept.
This exhibition explores worship and illumination in many of its tangible forms from past and present.
